On Tuesday 9th July we invited voluntary and community organisations to a showcase event at Josephine Butler College, Durham University to find out more about organisations with staff volunteer programmes looking to support the voluntary and community sector in County Durham.
Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV) refers to initiatives where companies encourage or enable their employees to volunteer their time and skills to benefit the community. This can include providing time away from work for volunteering, organising team volunteer events and skill matching your employees to community organisations. ESV programs are designed to foster a culture of social responsibility within companies while simultaneously providing valuable support to voluntary and community sector organisations.
The event aimed to highlight some of the offers available and how to access and utilise the skills and time of staff through the Employer Supported Volunteer schemes to make a meaningful impact on the communities of County Durham.
The event was well received and presentations throughout the morning highlighted positive ways to achieve a wider impact by linking into staff volunteer programmes and there was also an opportunity for discussions and networking.
Speakers from Durham County Council, Durham University Volunteering, Nissan, Pioneering Care Partnership and Amazon spoke about how their staff can take paid time off work to make a difference as a volunteer in their local area.
An employer-supported volunteering scheme can build resilience and a sense of belonging and help support your own physical and mental wellbeing. Organising volunteering days can also be an amazing way to build team skills as part of your ESV scheme too.
