Introducing the County Durham Volunteer Passport Scheme:
Volunteer Pathways to Neighbourhood Volunteering

Funded through the Know your Neighbourhood Fund and in line with the Vision for Volunteering's aim to create a diverse, innovative, ambitious, equitable and person-centred future for volunteering, DCA has developed a County Durham Volunteer Passport.

We are partnering with multiple organisations in County Durham as part of the Volunteer Passport Scheme. This collaborative approach forms a shared agreement on values, goals and standards regarding the recruitment, good practice, and deployment of volunteers -  allowing the volunteering workforce to move around with flexibility and consistency.

We aim to create a network of volunteers who are fully recruited, trained, supported and ready to respond quickly and appropriately to the needs of the local community.

As part of our partnership working arrangements the single recruitment and training route saves time and resources for Volunteer Passport Scheme partners and supports capacity building within the smaller organisations.

Find out more about the benefits to both volunteers and organisations here

How to become a volunteer passport partner organisation

If you would like to sign your organisation up to the passport scheme you can complete our Organisation Registration Form here, contact us at volunteering@durhamcommunityaction.org.uk or download a partner information pack here

We would like to reach out through this funding to those who may not have had opportunity to volunteer before, or who are experiencing loneliness.   The project offers support to access enriching opportunities that will help to improve wellbeing, skills, confidence, and social connections. Volunteering helps to connect communities, encourage people to develop skills and grow their networks; and help public services serve local communities. The positive effects of volunteering include benefits to mental and physical well-being particularly for those feeling isolated.

We are running an online information session for referrers/support workers who would like to refer individuals into the County Durham Volunteer Passport Scheme on Monday 22 January from 2 - 3pm; full details here

Guest Blog: Welcome Spaces Naomi Stevens, County Durham Community Foundation

Did you know that last winter Durham County Council and County Durham Community Foundation funded over 100 Warm Spaces across County Durham?

Community groups can once again apply for funding to go towards their welcoming and warm space for their local community.

Welcome Spaces are places where people can go to keep warm and well and get signposted to various support, help or confidential advice. You can find welcome spaces in venues such as community centres, village halls and churches. All those who receive funding from County Durham Community Foundation will sign up to the Welcome Spaces Charter. Through the charter, the welcome space is committing to working to the following standards: treat everyone equally, that the space will be free to use, safe, confidential and that someone will be on hand to help guests if needed.

All Welcome Spaces offer a warm cup of tea or coffee, free of charge and many offer snacks or even a hot meal. It’s a great opportunity for people to enjoy food and drink whilst chatting to other people. Community groups who run a Welcome Space do an amazing job at making other facilities available too. There may be options to charge a mobile phone, use the internet, read the paper or even do some laundry. In some spaces there are optional activities to get involved with, but there is always the option to have some quiet to sit and ‘just be’.

Ferryhill Ladder Centre is just one of the community spaces who has received funding from the Welcome Spaces Fund. Kath Merrington, development worker at the centre said:

"The Welcome Spaces funding has encouraged new people to come to the centre without any stigma attached. You could be coming in for absolutely anything, whether it be to get some advice, to socialise or to keep warm. The funding as also helped with social isolation too. People who visit the centre are making new friends as well as keeping warm and having refreshments. It has made a big impact in our community. It's a win-win really to apply for funding for your centre and local community!"

The fund was initially called Warm Spaces last winter. The name was changed to Welcome Spaces to reflect the full impact of these community spaces. Keeping warm is just one aspect of the fund, the community spaces are also great places to connect with others, find out about local support and create a great sense of community spirit.

More information on applying for funding can be found on CDCF’s website. Groups can apply for up to £3000 and funding must be used by end April 2024.

ACRE: Support to help village halls become more energy efficient

At the beginning of 2023, Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE) was shortlisted for a Third Sector award celebrating a project it had undertaken with corporate sponsors Utility Aid. The project, which sort to understand and address the energy concerns of village halls, found that over half of England’s 10,000+ village halls were experiencing financial difficulties due to increased energy bills.

But out of a crisis, opportunities have emerged. Whilst energy prices have remained high, many management committees secured funding for energy improvements to their building through the Platinum Jubilee Grant Fund.

And in the past month, there have been two more pieces of welcome news. First the government announced it would extend a VAT reduction scheme on the installation of Energy Saving Materials (ESMs) to buildings used for a charitable purpose in response to feedback from organisations including ACRE. And significantly, a new VCSE Energy Efficiency Scheme has been announced that will support organisations such as village halls conduct Independent Energy Assessments and apply for capital grants of up to £150k which can be used to retrofit energy improvement measures.
