Did You Know
How Employer Supported Volunteering can benefit your organisation
ESV event Durham

On Tuesday 9th July we invited voluntary and community organisations to a showcase event at Josephine Butler College, Durham University to find out more about organisations with staff volunteer programmes looking to support the voluntary and community sector in County Durham.

Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV) refers to initiatives where companies encourage or enable their employees to volunteer their time and skills to benefit the community. This can include providing time away from work for volunteering, organising team volunteer events and skill matching your employees to community organisations. ESV programs are designed to foster a culture of social responsibility within companies while simultaneously providing valuable support to voluntary and community sector organisations.

The event aimed to highlight some of the offers available and how to access and utilise the skills and time of staff through the Employer Supported Volunteer schemes to make a meaningful impact on the communities of County Durham.

The event was well received and presentations throughout the morning highlighted positive ways to achieve a wider impact by linking into staff volunteer programmes and there was also an opportunity for discussions and networking.

Speakers from Durham County Council, Durham University Volunteering, Nissan, Pioneering Care Partnership and Amazon spoke about how their staff can take paid time off work to make a difference as a volunteer in their local area.

An employer-supported volunteering scheme can build resilience and a sense of belonging and help support your own physical and mental wellbeing. Organising volunteering days can also be an amazing way to build team skills as part of your ESV scheme too.

If you’d like to learn more about employer supported volunteering and how your organisation can get involved, please email our Volunteering Specialist Charlotte Linton: Charlotte.Linton@durhamcommunityaction.org.uk

Rural Housing Enabling

This July our Rural Housing Enabler Susan Tron is attending a training event for the national Rural Housing Enabler (RHE) Programme, a networking opportunity for all RHE's to share and explore their experience carrying out the RHE role and delivering rural affordable housing.

There are some really good examples nationally that Susan would like to share with residents of County Durham. The session will also look forward, exploring two models for drawing on local funding for RHE services and will give DCA an update on national policy work.

Susan has been covering the Rural Housing Enabling role in County Durham since January and is constantly looking for good examples to inspire and innovate in our own area.

Susan has been speaking to residents in rural areas about what the issues rural residents in our county are facing. She also recently visited Northumberland who are much further forward with their RHE Programme. They have a healthy pipeline of rural affordable housing coming forward with a variety of business models.

If you would like to find our more or would like Susan to come out to talk to your community group please contact her here: susan.tron@durhamcommunityaction.org.uk or 07496 461 998

Poverty Truth Commission event
County Durham Poverty Truth Commission

‘Nothing about us, without us, is for us’.

County Durham Poverty Truth Commission, hosted by Durham Community Action, aims to respond to the question ‘what if people who struggle against poverty are involved in making decisions about tackling poverty?’

During 2024/25 we will work with people across Ferryhill, Shildon, Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe to try to answer that question. We will bring together people with experience of poverty and senior civic and business leaders to collaborate on changes which will lead to better outcomes.

If you work in these areas, know people with experience of struggling with poverty who would be willing to share their story, and who want to bring about change please get in touch.
