Cree Network

Did you know that Durham Community Action and Durham County Council's Public Health Team support 40 Crees across County Durham?

The Cree project launched in 2011, originally based on the Australian Men's Shed movement (Cree being a local colloquialism for sheds). The network has evolved and expanded to offer safe, communal spaces to men, women and young people who may be experiencing poor mental health, risk of social isolation, self-harm, suicide and require support around their general health and wellbeing.

Cree groups support people of differing ages across County Durham by offering a range of activities including horticulture, arts and crafts and various social opportunities. The majority also provide food and trips out as well as other support services such as advice regarding benefits, housing or finances and opportunities to wash and shower. Peer support has been identified by members as the most important benefit of joining the Cree groups.

The 40 Cree groups work well together, sharing good practice and meeting regularly at the Cree network, hosted by DCA on a quarterly basis. A new website was also launched in November 2021 to raise awareness of the Crees. You can use the interactive map to find out about Crees near you, the activities taking place, training opportunities and wellbeing support for Cree staff and volunteers. You can also access local health data to help further understand the needs of Cree members.

The Cree is all about building strength and emotional wellbeing for people who feel vulnerable. Evidence shows that people who attend Crees become more resilient and less reliant on traditional health measures as they learn how to manage their own wellbeing. The wider community benefits from this, as Cree coordinators note that members are less likely to seek out the support of other services and more likely to use the tools, support and friendship found within the Cree group.

One male Cree member said: “This group has saved my life. I don’t know what I would have done if you weren’t there.”

To find out more about the work of these groups and why they are so special you can contact susan.tron@durhamcommunity.org.uk or visit our website.

Horden Minewater Project Audio Case Study

In our latest audio case study we chat to Graham Easterlow at East Durham Trust about the Horden Minewater Project.

The project is looking at how a former County Durham coal mine could be used to grow food and support local businesses in Horden. A feasibility study will explore various ways to use heat from the mine water and examine the infrastructure already installed.

Good Practice Guide - involving volunteers with lived experience

Volunteering involving organisations (VIOs) are the heart of communities, involving local people both as beneficiaries and in the delivery of services.

Often, service users or clients make the transition to volunteer. By engaging and nurturing the people who have been in receipt of a service and have the capacity and interest to offer more, your organisation can benefit from invaluable 'first hand' experience, which will allow you to shape future provision accordingly.

VIOs are faced with various challenges when it comes to recruiting and managing volunteers. Careful consideration must be given to the needs of clients/service users as organisations ultimately have a duty of care to them. These organisations often support disadvantaged and vulnerable people in their work so it's important that volunteers - including those with lived experience - are suitably skilled and trained to deal with any potential circumstances which may arise.

Durham Community Action has produced a guide to assist organisations in the recruitment of individuals who have personal experience of the issues your organisation focuses on. Although the guide looks specifically at people with lived experience, it can be used as a  framework for any organisation recruiting volunteers to roles where they’re likely to be supporting vulnerable people.

Would you know the signs of Courier Fraud?

Officers from the North-East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) want to empower victims and raise awareness of the complex scams being used to dupe people out of their hard earned cash.

Work at the NEROCU continues to pursue fraudsters and bring them to justice, but officers are also determined to make sure the public feel confident and capable of challenging scammers to help catch them in the act and report them in real time.

The crime type, known as courier fraud, often targets vulnerable and elderly people via calls to their landline or mobile telephones from withheld numbers from someone purporting to be a police officer or figure of authority.

This criminal then proceeds to inform the victim of fraudulent activity on their bank account and sometimes claims that their bank staff are involved.

The criminal then directs the victim to attend their local bank to withdraw a large amount of cash and to return home where it will be collected by a police courier for examination – who is actually a criminal associate..

Temporary Detective Sergeant David Holcroft, from NEROCU’s Proactive Economic Crime Team (PECT), said the best thing for people to do is to accept nothing and challenge everything. Voluntary and community organisations can help by sharing information with staff volunteers and service users on how to protect yourself as well as how to report an incident.

Climate Fresk image
Climate Fresk

Climate Fresk is an engaging, educational Climate Workshop, open to anyone who wants a better grasp of what climate change is.

The tool uses a sequence of 42 cards which promote discussion and collaboration among participants, as the group creates a unique layout of causes, consequences, links and feedback loops. By the end of the session participants have covered key facts about the science of climate change and seen the way in which its elements relate to each other.

This link to a 3 minute You Tube video shows how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bilh8duunmU

The Durham Fresk Facilitators have added a second element to the workshop. In this part we start to explore locally relevant solutions, individually and collectively.

Each workshop takes 2.5 hours (including a short refreshment break). Currently a Climate Fresk is running on the first Wednesday of the month 6.15-9pm in Claypath Deli. Volunteers and members of the public are welcome to book a place via Eventbrite for either of the next 2 sessions 4th October or 1st November.
