Did You Know logo
Volunteers' Week

Did you know that Volunteers’ Week not only celebrates and showcases the fantastic work that our existing volunteers do, but it also raises awareness of volunteering and sparks the interest of people looking to embark on their volunteer journey?

During this years’ Volunteers’ Week, we saw volunteers being celebrated across the county which helps us promote the huge range of volunteering roles on offer across a diverse host of organisations.

This promotion will have sparked the interest of others wanting to volunteer, so now is an ideal opportunity to advertise volunteer roles on countydurhamvolunteering.org.uk to continue the momentum that Volunteers’ Week has sparked.

Traditionally we tend to see volunteering from the younger generation who are at the start of their careers or older retired people at the end of their careers but the Vision for Volunteering wants to see volunteering embedded throughout all stages of our lives which includes people of working age.

On 9th July voluntary and community sector organisations are invited to a showcase event to find out more about organisations who have staff volunteer programmes that can support the voluntary and community sector in County Durham.

The event aims to highlight the offer available and to best utilise the skills of the Employer Supported Volunteer offer to make a meaningful impact for the communities of County Durham.

You can book your place here

We have also produced a podcast as we nationally celebrate 40 years of Volunteers Week.  We chatted to NAVCA's CEO, Maddy Desforges and Teesdale Community Resources CEO, Rachel Tweddle about why volunteering is so important in their local community to inspire more people to make a difference. The Auckland Project achieves
County Durham Volunteer Kitemark

The successful achievement of the County Durham Volunteer Kitemark demonstrates that The Auckland Project meets standards to overcome barriers to volunteering and recognises the value of recruiting and retaining volunteers.

The Kitemark assessment process provides evidence that The Auckland Project is an organisation that manages a volunteering programme where volunteers receive a high quality, positive volunteering experience and it will support volunteers to make informed choices when they apply to volunteer.

Abby Thompson, Volunteering Manager said:

"Durham Community Action were delighted to present The Auckland Project with the County Durham Volunteer Kitemark award  after a process of assessment and interviews with volunteers and staff. The variety of roles and the support provided to volunteers to contribute The Auckland Project was evident. Volunteers played an active role in giving their views as part of the Kitemark assessment process”.

Volunteers at The Auckland Project shared their experiences with some taking up the opportunity to become Support Leaders providing extra help for volunteer.

“ I really enjoy my role at Auckland Castle, meeting and talking to visitors – if I am away for a week I can’t wait to get back”.

Staff spoke highly of the contribution that volunteers made to the visitor experience recognising their knowledge and enthusiasm enhanced visits and how much they enjoyed their day to day working alongside volunteers.

Michele Armstrong, Head of Volunteering at The Auckland Project said:

“We really can achieve so much more with the support of volunteers; we are striving to provide opportunities giving individuals choice a flexibility wherever possible. Gaining the Kitemark is something I am very proud of.”

Susan Tron Rural Housing Enabling
Support available for Rural Housing Enabling

Housing is a core issue for many rural areas for a variety of reasons. House prices are often beyond the reach of many people, particularly those on lower incomes and according to the Land Registry, rural house prices have risen 82% in 10 years. Building affordable homes can be difficult due to relatively high development costs per unit and the availability of suitable sites. Demand from second home buyers and holiday lets can also have a strong influence on the availability and value of housing in many rural areas.

Durham Community Action is part of a national Rural Housing Enabling Programme which aims to boost the supply of new rural affordable housing.

The network of Rural Housing Enablers are independent advisors who work with communities to support the development of affordable housing schemes. The advisors will help identify suitable development opportunities in communities, and support site owners and community representatives to navigate the planning system and create developments in rural areas that meet the needs of local people.

In Durham our Rural Housing Enabler, Susan, is keen to talk as many people in Teasdale and Weardale as possible. She recently visited the very popular coffee morning at Cowshill & Lanehead Village Hall.

If you would like to Susan to visit your group, Parish Council meeting or event please do get in touch by emailing susan.tron@durhamcommunityaction.org.uk

We are just as interested to collect the voices of those that don’t feel this approach is needed as well as the ones that do.

County Durham Poverty Truth Commission Introduction

Cathryn and Julie, DCA's newly formed County Durham Poverty Truth Commission team, travelled to Chester to the annual Poverty Truth Network facilitators gathering in May.

Poverty Truth Commissions seek to discover the answer to the question 'what if people who struggled against poverty were involved in making decisions about tackling poverty?' and has the strapline 'nothing about us, without us, is for us'.

At the event, Cathryn and Julie met with colleagues from thirteen other commissions to share ideas and learning. One of the first activities was to make a box representing your commission, so they used green to represent countryside, and an old pit wheel to represent the mining industry.

Our box was placed at the beginning of a timeline, to show we had just started on our journey. It was reassuring to find several other boxes also at the start, although some were on their second or third cycle!

We chatted and listened and pondered, finding time to speak to most of the thirty participants between us. A worthwhile experience, which will certainly inform our County Durham Poverty Truth journey.

Could your organisation provide free data-loaded SIM cards to people in need?

The National Databank is like a food bank, but for mobile data – it provides free mobile SIM cards to people who need internet connectivity.

Good Things Foundation created the National Databank with Virgin Media O2, and it’s supported by Vodafone and Three, with all of the providers donating mobile data SIM cards to help digitally excluded people.

Several organisations here in County Durham have already partnered with Good Things Foundation to offer free data SIM cards to low-income households and you can too. Each SIM offers between 20gb to 40gb of data with some also providing free calls and texts. SIMs can be activated for up to twelve months depending on the provider.

To register as a databank through the national digital inclusion network, and to find out more about the Good Things Foundation see the  National Databank - Good Things Foundation.

If you’d like to have support through the signup process or learn more about the scheme, please contact the Digital Durham team on: digital.durham@durham.gov.uk
